On Page Algorithm – Keyword Importance Of Content SEO Elements

WordPress is already well optimized for on page SEO right out of the box. All you need to work out is how to optimize the content in your blog posts.

These easy to follow practices will help your readers, searchers and the search engines like Google make it easier to find your content.

A combination of many small improvements will add up to a significant increase in new visitors. Focus your website on helping your site visitors as they are the users of your site not the search engines. And above all include unique content!

The main keyword factors and their importance effecting the on page seo of your content are:

  • 1st Words of Your Title
  • Page/Post URL (Permalink)
  • Main Heading H1
  • Keywords in Main Body of Content
  • Keywords in First Paragraph

Titles

Create Page/Post titles that are descriptive of your content and above all, unique. WordPress automatically includes tags for all your titles which proves WordPress is a great system for SEO, even straight out of the box.

Your page/post titles will be included in the search results.

If you have installed the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast (pronounced like Toast) you will see a snippet which looks exactly the same as it will look in Google Search Engine Results Pages – SERPS

If you’re new to SEO, you might want to check out this search result video by Matt Cutts – Head of Google Webspam, who personally uses the thesis theme for WordPress on his own blog.

Keep your titles to 65 characters or less including spaces as this is all Google will show in the search results.

1st Words of Your Title

The snippet above produced from the WordPress SEO plugin will show you exactly what the first words of your title will look like in the search engines results page – SERP. Include your main focus keyword in ALL your titles which should be located as close to the start of your title as possible.

Page/Post URL (Permalink)

The best permalink structure for your WordPress site is category/postname. Start a new site with this and install the redirection pluginĀ  if you change it after you have already published pages or posts. The exact custom permalink structure is /%category%/%postname%/.

Create descriptive, simple to understand categories and titles that are easy to follow for your users and the search engines. Your URL’s should contain your main focus keyword and key phrases that also act as your anchor text when used by external links. Your sites URL’s will be included in the search engine results as you can see in the Title snippet above.

Main Heading H1

Multiple heading sizes are used in order create a hierarchical structure for your content, making it easier for users to navigate through your document. H1 Headings highlight the most important text so make sure you use H1 headings correctly and don’t over do it.

Include a relevant keyword, main focus keyword or any type of keyword which has the same meaning to describe the content under the Main Heading.

Keywords in Main Body of Content

Quality content comes from the correct use of keywords and best practices when completing keyword research. Writing Unique, interesting content that’s also compelling to your readers will increase your influence. Content which matches the search query users needs will increase your reputation and attract natural links.

Cover all bases when completing keyword research as different searchers use different keywords depending on their level of experience and education etc. Including the most popular keywords which have the same meaning will cover more bases when it comes to exact and broad match search results.

Example: on page seo, page seo, web page seo, content seo. All these keywords including long tail keywords, key phrases and multiple word keywords have the same meaningĀ  and are entered into the search box by searchers looking for the same content.

Keywords in First Paragraph

The keywords used in the first 100 words of your content should be descriptive of your pages overall content. This will help your readers determine if you have content that they are looking for.

Overall Keyword Relevancy

Goes without saying that the keywords in your entire content should be related to your main focus keyword, title, headings and sub headings.

Alt Text for Your Images

The robots don’t have eyes so they cannot see your images however they do understand the alt text which you can use as a description of what your images contain. It is best practice to always include relevant keywords as alt text on all images on your site.

If your user cannot see your image for some reason then the alt text will also tell them what it is about. If you are using images that are clickable as links then alt text will show this as well if the image does not show because of a browser or internet problem.

Sub Headings H2-H4

WordPress makes it easy to add heading tags for all your headings automatically. Always use descriptive keywords in all your headings which help your readers understand what text is below the different headings.

1st Words of Body Content

Include a long tail keyword or key phrase related to your main focus keywords in the first words of your main content body.

Frequent Keywords and key phrases (long tail keyword)

Using highly relevant multiple word key phrases and different long tail keywords related to your content which have the same or similar meaning will help your content appear in more search results for those key phrases and individual keywords within those key phrases. Your content will be included in the search engines broad match results.

Anchor Text in Links

I’ve written about the importance and the power of using the correct descriptive keywords and key phrases in links both internal and outgoing. Internal links are becoming more powerful than incoming links in my opinion because sites are paying for them and using automated means to create them artificially.

The better the quality of the description of your anchor text and use of the most relevant keywords in the anchor then the better experience your reader will have and the better result Google will give you for making it an easier and better quality experience for your readers.

Your users should be able to easily understand the difference between your regular text and text which is linked this is why its important to both underline your links and use a different color for your links.

In conclusion

Aim to focus your content on the needs of the searcher and the keywords used in the search query. Your content should be based on keyword research that matches the keywords used in the search query. If your on page SEO is done correctly your searchers will become your readers and some will also become your subscribers.
