Moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org is a common question that comes up in many of the web design forums on the internet.
In this tutorial, i will show you the best method on how to move your WordPress.com blog to your own self hosted installation provided by WordPress.org.
Ready to get started?
It’s Easy As…
- Find a Web Host which supports WordPress.org
- Install WordPress yourself using the one click installation.
- Read the WordPress guide and Learn how to use WordPress yourself.
Export Tool
Moving your blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org is very simple thanks to the import/export tool provided by WordPress.
Located in your Dashboard under tools, the WordPress export tool copies all your content for easy import to another installation after you have already setup using your own web host.
Export
When you click the button below, WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer.
This file will contain your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags.
Once you’ve saved the download file, you can use the Import function in another installation to import your content.
Import Options
If you have posts in another blogging platform, WordPress can also import these to your new installation. The screen shot below shows which blogging systems WordPress can import from.
Simply choose a system to import from by clicking the appropriate link in blue.

Hi Brad!
So Glad I found you. I have a blog,http://daiseyjayne.com and a temp wordpress blog, http://69.195.124.76/~daiseyja/daiseyjaynecom/. So I am in the process of going from a WordPress hosted blog to a self (Bluehost) hosted blog. If I transfer my blog content to my “new, temporary” blog will I lose it from the “old” (wordpress hosted) blog? I hope you follow me, I’m so not a techie!
I’ve already signed up with Bluehost, renewed my domain through Weebly (was too late to go through Bluehost). Not sure if I should get my new blog ready and THEN change name servers?
Sorry so confused, I’m getting quite frustrated
Hi Jayne
Won’t lose it.
Just use the export/import tool and when you have finished, point the DNS to bluehost and change the url’s. Better get Bluehost to do this when you are ready.
Thank you!
Hi again,
I have successfully moved all to blue host and now I don’t see any followers (I had about 95), my husband signed up last night to follow me via email and it still says 0 followers. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jayne
Your source code tells me you are still hosting at WordPress.com. Did you change the DNS?
We have changed our name servers with the registrar for our site but have not made any DNS changes. This was done about 24 hours ago. What in DNS needs to change?
Thank you!
Once you’ve completed the move, all you need to do is point your domains name servers to your host.
