Setting up your blog the right way the first time is easier said than done.
When i first started blogging with WordPress, i created over 40 categories!
This was a big mistake which is the reason i have written this post so you can learn from my mistakes.
There’s many different parts of WordPress to setup and configure properly before you hit the publish button on your very first blog post.
One of these is Categories.
WordPress uses both categories and tags to group related content together.
- Categories are a bit like the index in a book
- Tags are for grouping more specific posts together
An example of this is social media.
In order to keep the amount of categories to a reasonable limit, why not create one category for social media and use tags or sub pages for the different types of social media.
Category > Social Media
- Sub Pages > Facebook > Twitter > Youtube
or
- Tags > Facebook > Twitter > Youtube
Choosing Categories
If you wanted to create a blog about WordPress, i think the best way to decide on what categories to create would be to take a look in the Dashboard.
Here you’ll find the main areas of WordPress where you end up writing dozens of posts under each category.
Category Examples:
- Dashboard
- Posts & Pages
- Media
- Links
- Comments
- Appearance
- Plugins
- Users
- Tools
- Settings
10 -12 categories would cover almost everything if you wanted to start blogging about WordPress.
Sub Pages & Tags
If you wanted to add more specific content under each category, you could easily create either:
- Create Sub Pages
- Add Post Tags
Personally, i prefer tags to sub pages and here’s why.
The reason i like tags are because they are also normally included at the end of each post next to the category link.
This gives your readers an opportunity to read related content which you have grouped together under one specific tag.
An example of this is the Plugins category.
I have grouped together plugins for different purposes like: Social, E-mail & Seo plugins to name a few.
If you find yourself writing large amounts of posts under one category, you can group highly related content together with tags. This makes it easier for readers to find more specific information.
