Once you’ve enabled and setup multi site using these instructions, you may also need to enable wild card subdomains on your server.
You can choose from using sub directories or sub domains for your sub sites however you only need to follow this setup process if you have chosen sub domains:
Sub Domain Example: demo.yourdomain.com
If your web host provides you with cPanel to manage your server, creating a wild card sub domain is very easy.
This tutorial is based on using Bluehosts cPanel.

You don’t need to follow them as they can be confusing and deal with mainly multi site setup for Plesk and other control panels.
So lets get started using a simple step by step guide.
Go To cPanel > Domains
Login to cPanel and scroll down to the Domains section then click on Sub Domains.
- Select the domain from the drop down which you have setup multi site on.
- Enter an Asterisk * into the Sub Domain field
- Enter the exact name of the directory folder for the domain you have WordPress multi site installed in
- Click create.
You’ll then see your wild card sub domain has been created and will look like what i have done in the screenshot below.
