The latest WordPress default theme, Twenty Eleven, offers more custom options than ever before giving the premium theme market some work to do.
The successor to the five year old WordPress default theme, twenty ten, has finally arrived and seems to be a big improvement on the old version.
If you’re planning on customizing the Twenty Eleven theme i suggest you install a child theme over the top which will save all your custom coding when you update the parent theme, otherwise you will lose your customization.
Just as good as many premium themes in my opinion yet still not nearly as many design options as the thesis theme for WordPress.
New features include:
- Multiple templates including Photolog & Tumblelog
- 7 Post formats to choose from
- Footer widgets standard
- Rotating header images
- Pull qoutes align left or right
- Custom link colours
- Alternate colour schemes & layouts
- Includes PSD files for even more customization options
Twenty Eleven is due out with the next release of WordPress which is 3.2 in July 2011 otherwise you can try it now below.

As always, this software is still in development and we don’t recommend that you run it on a production site — set up a test site just to play with the new version. If you break it (find a bug), please report it, and if you’re a developer, try to help fix it.
Twenty Eleven 1.0
The 2011 theme for WordPress is sophisticated, lightweight, and adaptable. Make it yours with a custom menu, header image, and background — then go further with available theme options for light or dark color scheme, custom link colors, and three layout choices. Twenty Eleven comes equipped with a Showcase page template that transforms your front page into a showcase to show off your best content, widget support galore (sidebar, three footer areas, and a Showcase page widget area), and a custom “Ephemera” widget to display your Aside, Link, Quote, or Status posts. Included are styles for print and for the admin editor, support for featured images (as custom header images on posts and pages and as large images on featured “sticky” posts), and special styles for six different post formats.
