Thesis Hook Plugin – Easily Insert Any Type of Content or Code Anywhere in Thesis

Have you ever wanted to insert some text, an image, video or something else to a specific location on your site other than your content area? WordPress hooks allow you to do this but you’ll need to write php code to make them work.

Is there an easier way? The Thesis OpenHook plugin allows you to insert HTML, PHP, CSS or Javascript to any location there’s a hook in Thesis.

Here’s a map of Thesis Hook Home Page locations showing where you can insert content. Here’s another map of Thesis Hook Post Page locations as well. This plugin allows you to do this without having to edit/add code to your theme’s custom functions.php file or any other files which contain code.

For non coders or anyone who wants to save time, this is an excellent solution as not everyone wants to become a master of PHP coding.

This is an example of one of the boxes which you can use to add content to depending on the hook location you want the content to be displayed on your site.

Add Multiple Galleries & Select Images in Your WordPress Gallery

I’ve already showed you how to add images/pictures using the WordPress gallery system is very simple and doesn’t provide may options for multiple galleries or selecting which images to display in those galleries.

Luckily there’s a Multiple Galleries plugin which adds more options so you can easily select which images to display and also use multiple galleries in one post/page.

In this WordPress tutorial l’ll show you how easy it is to add options and flexibility when using the native WordPress gallery.

Search the WordPress plugins directory for Multiple Galleries Plugin and install it. There aren’t any settings for this plugin so its very simple yet effective.

Upload your pictures/images to your Media library and save changes.

Click Insert Gallery and click the Gallery tab to select the images you wish to include in that gallery by using the check boxes next to each image

Click inset gallery and the images you have selected will be included within the gallery

If you want another gallery in the same post/page, simple repeat the same method. You can choose from the same images you have already uploaded or add new ones.

Inserting multiple galleries and choosing which images you want included in those galleries is very easy if you install the Multiple Galleries plugin for WordPress.

How To Link Next Gen Gallery Images & Titles To Post or Page URL’s

In my last post i showed you how to create a NGG custom field named ‘Link’ to next gen gallery images.

To enable linking from your image titles and to make the images clickable to the links you add in the custom link field, you need to add PHP code to your NGG plugin files.

Change Next Gen Gallery Effects Settings

You’ll also need to change the plugin settings for Next Gen Gallery.

Go to Gallery > Options > Effects and change the Javascript Thumbnail Effect to ‘None’. Click Save Changes.

Next Gen Gallery Effects

Edit Next Gen Gallery Templates File

This step involves adding some PHP code to the nextgen-gallery/view/gallery.php file.

You can access this file under Plugins > Editor >

Select plugin to edit: NextGEN Gallery > Click Select > Under Plugin Files Click  nextgen-gallery/view/gallery.php

You can access the nextgen-gallery/view/gallery.php file using FTP or cPanel.

I’m going to use cPanel as it provides a built in editor and also displays line numbers where as the Plugin Editor in WordPress doesn’t and FTP requires you use a text editor like Notepad ++

Note: Always take backup of your files before editing PHP code. I have downloaded a copy of the original, unedited file i am about to edit in cPanel to my desktop so i can easily delete any mistake i make when editing or adding code to the file and upload the original file to start again if needed.

Here’s the location of the Next Gen Gallery Plugin file named ‘gallery.php’ that needs to be edited.

Once you have arrived at this location, click on download and save a copy of this file to your desktop.

Now right click the gallery.php file and click Code Edit. Once the file has opened up scroll down to line 41.

This is what you will see:

<div class="ngg-gallery-thumbnail" >
<a href="<?php echo $image->imageURL ?>" title="<?php echo $image->description ?>" <?php echo $image->thumbcode ?> >
<?php if ( !$image->hidden ) { ?>
<img title="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" alt="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" src="<?php echo $image->thumbnailURL ?>" <?php echo $image->size ?> />
<?php } ?>

This is what it looks like after the code has been added. You can copy and paste this code over the top of your existing code or simply add the additional code to the correct location within this block of code.

<div class="ngg-gallery-thumbnail"><a title="<?php echo $image->description ?>" href="<?php echo $image->ngg_custom_fields[">thumbcode ?> >
<!--?php if ( !$image--->hidden ) { ?>
<img title="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" src="<?php echo $image->thumbnailURL ?>" alt="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" />size ?> />
</a><a href="<?php echo $image->ngg_custom_fields[">
<!--?php echo $image--->alttext ?>
<!--?php } ?-->

Here’s another copy of the edited code displayed in a different format as the Syntex highlighter used above wraps long lines. Note the custom field i created for linking images and titles to URL’s named ‘Link’.

<div class="ngg-gallery-thumbnail" >
<a href="<?php echo $image->ngg_custom_fields["Link"]; ?>" title="<?php echo $image->description ?>" <?php echo $image->thumbcode ?> >
<?php if ( !$image->hidden ) { ?>
<img title="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" alt="<?php echo $image->alttext ?>" src="<?php echo $image->thumbnailURL ?>" <?php echo $image->size ?> />
<a href="<?php echo $image->ngg_custom_fields["Link"]; ?>">
<?php echo $image->alttext ?>
<?php } ?>

Update: I don’t use NGG anymore as the native gallery in WordPress 3.5 combined with Jetpacks Carousel is outstanding.

Don’t forget that the correct file to edit is in the Next Gen Gallery plugin files and NOT the NGG custom fields plugin files.

You could also add a custom field for a description and link that to another post or external URL. Linking Next Gen Gallery thumbnails and images to other posts and pages is easy and generates more page views as well as increasing time on site.

Don’t forget to download the edited gallery.php file after you have finished adding the code as any plugin upgrade will delete the changes you have made to the file.

If you have any problems, send me a note via the contact form and i’ll reply you with the edited file which you can easily upload.

Update: You can now install a plugin to add custom links for images in a gallery. This plugin works for images added to the native WordPress gallery and not NextGen gallery images.

How To Add a Custom Field Using Next Gen Gallery Custom fields Plugin for WordPress

Next Gen Gallery (NGG) Custom fields plugin enables you to add a custom field box next to all your gallery images in your Manage Gallery admin settings.

The image below shows the default fields included when you install the next gen gallery plugin plus an extra custom field named ‘Link’ which i have added using the NGG Custom Fields Plugin.

After installing the NGG custom fields plugin, i added an extra field on the far right of this image so i can link NGG thumbnail images to URL’s.

This field is not standard when you install the Next Gen Gallery plugin so i’ll show you how to do this.

Under Gallery in your admin panel settings, click on Manage Gallery > Gallery to see the custom field added.

You can use the NGG Custom field plugin to add a custom field for any purpose you like however you’ll also need to edit some code in the plugin files to enable your custom field to work.

In the next post i’ll show you how to edit your NGG plugin files so your custom field ‘Link’ shows a clickable link to the URL you have entered in the custom field. Your NGG thumbnail images will also be clickable as well.

WordPress Lightbox Plugin – How To Add a Lightbox Plugin for Your WordPress Gallery

If you want a nice lightbox effect so the full size of your original image pops up then you’ll need to add a lightbox plugin. If you resize your image before you upload it to your WordPress Gallery then the qaulity of the image will be reduced.

Using a lightbox plugin for WordPress enables you to upload the original size of images and pictures and then insert them into your posts/pages as thumbnails using the WordPress Gallery. You can only use this lightbox plugin with the WordPress gallery thumbnails.

The lightbox plugin will then display the original size of your images and pictures when your site visitors click the thumbnails. You can still crop your images and pictures before you upload them but its best not to resize them otherwise the lightbox will not show the original size and qaulity of your images.

You’ll find an example of a lightbox at the end of this post.

The advantages of installing a lightbox plugin are:

Normally when you click an image that’s been inserted in a post or page, it links to an attachment page which only contains the image and not the text which relates to that image. This means that any of your readers will be taken to another page which only contains the image and not the text.

When you have a lightbox plugin installed, the image will open in a pop up and your readers will also be able to view the entire original  size image on the same page as your text.

Another advantage is if you have images inserted which are larger than the width of your page/post, you don’t need to resize them to make them smaller. Resizing images to make them smaller so they fit into your page reduces the qaulity of your images. The lightbox plugin will open a thumbnail so the original image can be viewed in full original size.

There’s many lightbox plugins available for free in the WordPress plugins directory. If you’re using the default WordPress gallery which comes with your installation then i suggest you try this free lightbox plugin named –   jQuery Lightbox For Native Galleries.

Simply install this plugin and select the theme you want to use from the settings page. There are no more settings to configure. Your thumbnail images will now open up in a pop up box displaying the full size of the original image which is the best qaulity you can display.Beginners may need:  How to install a plugin

Lightbox Display Example

jQuery Lightbox For Native Galleries

Its a good idea to use a descriptive file name when uploading your images to your WordPress media library or gallery as the file name will be shown below each image in the lightbox as seen below the above image. To do this you can simply rename your images before you upload them to your WordPress media library or gallery.

You can change the default settings for thumbnails under Settings > Media in your WordPress admin panel (Dashboard)

To create the a gallery, all you need to do is insert  a  tag with the word gallery inside into this Page’s content. No modifications are required to get the Lightbox working once its installed. Here’s a tutorial on how to add a  WordPress gallery to your posts and pages.

This lightbox plugin will work on all WordPress Gallery thumbnails. It won’t work on single image thumbnails. If you are using NEXTgen gallery i suggest you install a lightbox specific for NEXTGen.

How To Show or Hide Sidebar Widgets On Specific Pages in WordPress

Have you ever wanted to hide sidebar content on specific pages or posts? In other words, you may only want to show content in a widget on certain pages if it relates to the content on that page.

The ‘Display Widgets‘ plugin for WordPress can help you show or hide any widget on any page or post simply by checking the right boxes.

Why would you want to use this plugin to show or hide widgets on your site? Here’s a few reasons:

  1. You have banner adds in your sidebar which show on all pages and only want to show the products which relate to the content on that page.
  2. You don’t want to show a RSS feed or subscription box on your c0ntact page but you do on all other pages
  3. You want to target specific pages with related content in your sidebar on those specific pages only
  4. You only want to show a list of links on some pages and hide on others

Displaying different widgets on specific pages is a great way to increase conversions and keep all the content on a specific page relevant to that pages title.

Show or hide widgets   This plugin is named ‘Display Widgets’ and once installed will add check boxes to all your existing plugins. You simply select, Show on checked or hide on checked and then check the boxes next to the pages you want to show or hide that specific widget on.

This image shows my blogroll links widget which i only want to show on certain pages which the links are relevant to.

You may also choose to show or hide specific categories of posts or a list of comma separated post I.D’s.

This result can also be achieved by adding PHP code however the use of this plugin is much easier and more flexible if you would like to avoid coding.

The Display Widgets plugin is available for free from the WordPress plugins directory and can also be used in any widget area on your site.

Pretty cool free plugin in my opinion and well worth trying if you’re wanting to show or hide widget content on specific WordPress pages.

Another option is to use the built in Sidebar Widget Manager offered by the Woo Themes framework. I use this feature myself rather than the plugin because its better quality and works 100% of the time if setup correctly.

The display widgets plugin did not work properly on some themes i tested and does not provide support or updates.

How To Create a Squeeze Page Using a Plugin for WordPress

Searching for a simple method to create a Squeeze page? I’ve recently discovered a WordPress plugin that’s easy to use and also produces visually stunning squeeze pages as well as Landing/Sales pages for WordPress.

This isn’t the first plugin i have tried for this purpose and i can’t say i’ve been overly impressed with other squeeze page plugins until i actually created my own using this new plugin.

If you understand CSS you can also add additional styling and decoration using this plugin which normally won’t be needed.

From here on i’ll show you how easy it is to create your own squeeze page if you’re using the same Squeeze page plugin.

Once you’ve uploaded, installed and activated the plugin, you’ll be able to use it on all existing pages or create a new page and select which template suits the layout you have in mind.

Choose a Template based on the layout you want and click update. Now its time to add your Background colors. If you simple want to leave them the same as your sites background then  move on to the next step. You may also add a background image if you wish.

Background-LogoYou can upload your own logo or even use a special logo for this particular page.

When adding a Headline you can also choose the font type, size and color.  Then add a sub headline and use a different size and color so it stands out.

Next is the form code. Simply copy and paste your code from your email service provider and paste it into this box. Aweber and mailchimp email form code works perfectly.

There’s 8 different squeeze page templates to choose from the next steps depends on which template you have chosen.

You can also place Google analytics tracking code in this box to track your conversions.

This plugin makes it easy to override existing template styling by adding custom CSS code into this box above.

There’s also boxes and fields for:

  1. Bullet point list of benefits
  2. Touts
  3. Product images
  4. Video
  5. Customer Quotes
  6. Customer credits

Best WordPress Database Backup Plugin

Here’s 4,800 reasons i recommend you backup your database if not your entire site.

Database backup has never been easier if you’re a blogger.

The only confusion may be deciding on the best plugin to use for the job.

The most popular free plugin is named WP-DB-Backup.

This tutorial will guide you through a Step by Step process on how to

  1. install a database backup plugin (WP DB Backup)
  2. complete backup of your database(s).

Note: Backing up your database will copy all the content in the tables of your installation.

It will NOT copy your  files.

Read more on how to create a full copy of your files and databases.

Step 1. Login to your Dashboard and navigate to → PluginsAdd New.

Click Add New and Type WP DB Backup into the search box.

Step 3. Options for saving your Database.

You can choose between 3 options:

  1. Save to server
  2. Download to your computer
  3. Email to an email address of your choice

Database Backup Options

If you database is more than 5-10mg you may not be able to select the email option as the size will be to big.

Most Databases for a standard website/blog should be o.k to send by email.

Step 4. Schedule.

Create automatic database copies simply by scheduling daily, weekly or monthly.

What Are QR Codes & How To Make QR Codes For Your Website

QR CodesQR Codes have been around for awhile however the use of qr codes outside of Japan has been minimal until recently.

You simply point your mobile camera at the qr code and receive a text message, website URL or image depending on what content the owner of the qr code used to make create the code.

Mobile Devices also offer free reader applications to decode qr codes.

What are QR Codes

QR codes where created in Japan back in 94 for use by Toyota to enable high speed reading of the code using part of a mobile device. QR is short for Quick Response and allows the camera in a mobile device to decode the contents of qr code at high speed.

Creating QR Codes using a WordPress Plugin

You can make QR Codes manually using php script, using a qr code generator or you can install a plugin like the Super Cool QR Code Plugin for WordPress. Once installed, the WordPress plugin will automatically create QR code which you can place anywhere on your site using a short code or anywhere in the widget.

To create qr code using a WordPress plugin, all you need to do is add the content you wish to be converted to qr code into the widgets content field and the plugin generates the code for you. This is one of the easiest way to create a qr code for your WordPress blog.

The Super Cool QR Code plugin uses the Google Chart API to generate on-the-fly QR codes for your blog.

Making QR codes Manually

You can also create your qr code manually using  a  qr code generator.

Most popular mobile devices offer a range of free QR code reader apps to make it easy to see qr codes on websites and the internet.

Test Your QR Code

You can decode qr codes to test them before you make your qr codes public on your website.

Firefox QR decoder Addon

Firefox also offer a free mobile barcoder which can be used as a qr decoder to read code on the internet.

How To Configure WP Super Cache So It Works With WP eStore

WP Super Cache is a great plugin which helps speed up your site yet can conflict with other plugins not unlike W3 Total Cache.

If you have the WP eStore plugin activated you’ll need to edit some code in your WP Super cache files in order to make the plugins work properly together. What i mean by this is you’ll need to add a small block of code to the Super Cache plugin file so your eStore is cacheable and fast like the rest of your site.

You will need to copy this code from the tips & tricks website. A link to this code will appear in your WordPress dashboard after you have installed both WP eStore & WP Super cache or W3 Total Cache.

Here’s the code that needs to be added to the wp-cache-phase1.php file

Image 1.

Caution: Always create full site backup before editing php code.

The same applies for all 3 Tips & Tricks plugins below which integrate perfectly together as they are all created by the same developer:

WP eStore
WP eMember
WP Affiliate Plugin

The reason i like these 3 plugins so much is because they’re all lightweight plugins which work well together. Having spent so much time on the various WordPress forums i see so many ongoing  issues with both shopping cart and eCommerce integration as well as problems with plugins conflicting with others. The video tutorials are also excellent.

First step: Navigate to the correct location where the code is to be added.

Login to your hosting accounts cPanel and find File Manager
Click File Manager and locate public-html
Then click through public-html →wp-content→plugins →wp-cache-phase1.php

Once you arrive at wp-cache-phase1.php open the php file by right clicking on it and click on code edit. The WordPress hosts i recommend all offer a built in editor which makes it very easy to add code to any php files when using your hosts cPanel tools.

The other way to add code to a php file would be by using FTP and an external editor like notepad++ but i think File Manager is easier.

Open the “wp-super-cache/wp-cache-phase1.php” file and search for the following line of code:

if ( wp_cache_user_agent_is_rejected() )

Second step: Paste the php code into the correct location

Open the php file and navigate to line 112

Paste the code in Image 1 above this line of code:

WP Super Cache
Here’s the before and after shots of what it should look like:
Paste the new block of code above the code in the red box

WP eStore - WP Super Cache
Below is the new block of code which has been pasted above the existing line of code on line 112

WP eStore - WP Super Cache - Code edit
Make sure you save the changes before closing File Manager.

If your using W3 Total Cache with any of these 3 plugins by Tips & tricks, you’ll need to add a different line of code.

The Best WordPress Video Plugin and How To Install It

Video player plugins aren’t the easiest to configure if you’re a newbie or technically challenged.

I’ve recently started a free membership site for beginners needing to learn how to setup WordPress using videos tutorials.

I wanted to install a video player and plugin rather than play around with code.

[notable]Update: I’ve now changed and suggest using the ProPlayer plugin which is a customized version of the JW Player software. Far easier & better solution.[/notable]

Step 1

To use Flowplayer you need to install the software as well as install the Fv WordPress Flowplayer plugin which is made by Foliovision not Flowplayer.

Click Plugins > Add New > and type fv wordpress flowplayer into the Search Plugins box.

Once you locate the plugin in the plugin directory, install and activate it.

Install Video Plugin

Step 2

Flowplayer works very well and looks great so all i did was download the free version from the flow player website, unzip the folder and drag the folder across to  a new folder in a sub directory on my server which is

You could upload the contents of the folder into a new directory on your server but this does exactly the same thing and its faster.

Then i installed Flowplayer which adds a small f above your editor and looks like this.

WordPress Video Plugin

After you upload the video file (MP4) to your Media Library, you simply click the small f and come to a screen like this one where you can add the URL of the video.

Upload Video

Once you have upload the video, MP4 format (Will take other formats) to your server, simply copy and paste the URL of the location into the Video field above.

You can also change the size of the video player. Here i have set mine to 520 wide by 420 height as you can see in the screen shot above.

WP Media Library URL

This is the URL you need to add to the Video Field when you insert the Flowplayer tag (click the small f) into a post/page.

WP Media LibraryA splash page can be a image of your logo or something else to promote whats in the video and or yourself/business.

You could  take a screen shot of your website and upload it as an image then insert the URL where it says splash image. You can also add a splash image at the end of the video also.

[flowplayer src=’′ width=520 height=420 splashend=show splash=’’ redirect=’’ popup=’24 Premium WordPress Video Tutorials’]

If your wanting to create your own website and like using qaulity video tutorials, this set of 24 WordPress videos is perfect for you.

Consider this: You are far better off to embed your own videos into your own WordPress posts and pages and host them on your own server so you can play them with your own video player than host them on Youtube or somewhere else.Why? Read my related post on video sitemap plugin for WordPress and you’ll easily understand why.

You can still upload it to Youtube and other places you’ll get hits but you want your URL indexed on Google NOT Youtube’s.

Conclusion: The best WordPress Video Plugin,  FV WordPress Flowplayer, works flawlessly with the best free video player for WordPress and its simple to install, setup and configure on your own server which you control.

Editor Problems

If you have a problem with your editor caused by the theme you are using, i suggest you try installing Folio visions editor and see if this fixes the problem.
