Simply click this button to download the free Divi child theme. The Divi child theme has been created for use with the Divi parent theme by Elegant Themes.
How To Use This Child Theme
- You need to install the Divi parent theme by Elegant Themes first.
- Once you have installed the Divi parent theme, you can install this child theme.
About This Child Theme
The child theme contains 2 files.
- A footer.php file which includes modified footer links which you can customize yourself or simply delete the file altogether.
-
It also includes a style.css file which contains CSS to customize the styling of the footer links and change the colors of the social icons in the footer. You can modify the CSS to your own liking or remove all the CSS entirely and add your own.
Note : The Divi child theme requires the installation of the parent theme first before it can be activated.
what an idiot … of course, it’s a child theme, not a plugin!
hahaha.
: >) Got it working, but, for reasons unknown, enabling the child theme goofs up my navigation menu at the top of the page (the custom menu is lost and instead all page are listed).
To see if this has anything to do with your footer.php or functions.php files, I eliminated them along with all custom css, but the menu is still goofed up.
Any ideas? Perhaps an improper path for the Divi style.css.
Whats happens if you remove all the files in the child theme except for the style.css file.
And then remove all the CSS except for the import line?
Yes, that’s just what I did. The code is down to this:
/*
Theme Name: Divi Child Theme
Description: A child theme to house custom coding which modifies the Divi parent theme by Elegant Themes. Includes default line numbers where the code was taken from in the parent theme.
Author: Brad Dalton http://wpsites.net
Template: Divi
*/
@import url(“../Divi/style.css”);
When you change themes, you generally need to re-save the menu again.
You might also find widgets have moved in some themes
That’s gotta be it. Will test soon!
Just tried. The problem was that the checkbox for “Primary Menu” was no longer checked. I shoulda been able to figure that out … guess I’m a bit rusty.
So i wonder if the child theme works o.k now with all the files and CSS in the style sheet?
Yes, it does work. And I see you’ve added a Portfolio CPT!
hahaha. Thought you might like that!
Thanks for the feedback which is always welcome Lang.
Not sure Divi will be as much fun to customize as SP, time will tell.
When I try to install divi-master.zip, WordPress says “The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.”
I wonder what’s wrong?
Now that there’s a new version of Divi do we need a new child theme, or will this one still do fine?
Hello Scott
The child theme only stores your custom coding and will not be effected by the parent themes updates.
Hey Brad,
Thank you for this post that brought Divi to my attention. After playing with the demo a bit, I see that Divi looks and behaves very similar to 90% of the themes built with Visual Composer and are available for sale at Themeforest.
I only checked the demo theme so I don’t have a first hand experience about Divi’s speed compared to those Themeforest themes. Checked the demo to the Pingdom Website Speed Test and got only a 75 but I’m sure that’s not accurate since it also calculated the Elegant Themes main site resources. Any feedback on Divi’s actual speed?
I also noticed that there’s no schema.org markup built into the Divi theme.
Here’s my main 2 questions regarding Divi: First, what’s Divi’s main advantage, if any, over any other of the Themeforest sold themes that look and behave very similar to it? Second, Does Divi have any advantages over any of the StudioPress themes (preserving the schema.org markup and reducing the learning curve to the new framework) if Visual Composer along with its extensions is used as a plugin to built a very similar theme?
Thank you again!
On the face of it, it looks like Divi is a bit like the backend dashboard of WordPress which enables you to move around dashboard widgets so they display in 1 or 2 columns, clearly extended further in Divi.
I hope to learn more about Divi over the coming months as i dig deep into the code in each file and write tutorials in support of customizing the parent theme.
I should then be in a position to answer your questions with some accuracy and offer you some value.
At this pint in time, with the amount of experience and code i have written, i feel like i can build any theme or website on Genesis.
I’m 100% with you about Genesis themes. That and the fact that they are at least 2 times faster than anything else on the market (although that speed comes because of the lack of fancier newer technology) keeps me working with Genesis themes.
From what I’ve gathered from testing the demo, Divi uses a light version of mega menus and a lighter customized version of Visual Composer as an editor/builder which enables Divi to use some of the newer fancy technology that most Themeforest themes use. It still lacks the schema.org markup though and it’s much slower than the better Themeforest themes, like “Enfold” which also uses a customized version of Visual composer as the editor/builder.
I’m going to try building a Genesis theme using the Visual Composer plugin to add some of the technology that I like and at the same time keep the schema.org markup that Divi is lucking. I just hope that VC won’t slow it down that much.
I just started a site on Divi and made my child theme but just the basics. A mail arrives in my mailbox and what it is?? a Divi child theme with some customizations. Yeah! 🙂
Thanks for that! And if you are going to make tutorials or write posts about how to customize Divi , I’m in!
Your tutorials are great!
Thanks
Hello Chrys
Its not much yet so i’m sure yours is better but looking forward to writing about Divi.
Hi Brad ,
I noticed a small mistake in the child theme, it’s not calling the stylesheet because it’s written
@import url(“../divi/style.css”); instead of @import url(“../Divi/style.css”);
small “d” versus Capital “D”
Cheers!
Thanks Chrys
I will update the link to the child theme to Github rather than my server.
Works for me locally.
Glad to see posts on Divi Brad. I’ve been using it for a while and it really is easy to use. Looking forward to your ideas/thoughts on customization – like building new custom post types in Divi where their incredible builder can be leveraged.
I’m trying to create a new post type with additional taxonomies with the page builder support and widget for searching those taxonomies 🙂
thanks for sharing your incredible knowledge and insights. I never miss a post!
Will be interesting to see if Divi includes support for CPT Taxonomy type creation like Genesis.
I have already written about this and the code will also work on any theme so shouldn’t be a problem with Divi.
Brad do I take it from this that when using any theme you would always create a child theme even if it was a clone of the parent?
There’s only 2 ways you can keep the modifications to your parent theme safe from updates.
1. A child theme
2. Or a site specific plugin
I don’t think there are any other options unless someone can think of one.
No screen cap at least of what a site running the child theme looks like?
Sorry, don’t follow?
Please use your real name when you comment.
At least your first name, thanks.
The name’s Eldon Sarte.
I see what the Divi theme looks like. This child theme changes the way it looks and feels, yes? Or not much? I don’t know, since I can’t see without downloading and installing all of it (or even if I want to purchase it; no idea right now if Divi’s premium or freebie; just came here through an ad on FB). A screencap (or better yet, demo) will tell me whether I want to go through the effort/possible expense of doing that. Maybe I just don’t see a link to it, then my bad. If not, a screencap would be good. Thanks.

Hello Eldon
The child themes only includes a tiny bit of CSS to change the footer links and social links in the footer as an example of what a child theme is used for.
I am planning on writing tutorials about how to customize Divi so the child theme is needed to store all the custom code.
There’s nothing exciting in there at the moment but i hope to add some code snippets which you can add to the child theme very soon.
I’ll add a button which links to the Divi parent theme demo.
Thanks Brad. If it’s a lot of trouble, don’t worry about it (although demos are imo quite helpful in getting an idea of a theme’s look, feel and behavior, more or less). I checked out the Divi page before posting, but just wasn’t sure how your child affected it. It’s not exactly unusual to see child themes render the core theme pretty much unrecognizable. 🙂
I’m not inexperienced. I’m the publisher of the Wordpreneur site, and was thinking of doing a new series of posts recommending WordPress themes specifically suited to my site’s particular audience. So I’ll be back when I get a chance, for sure… Thanks!
Everything is tested and the results of installing the child theme after the parent theme are in the small screenshot on this post.
Its basically a blank child theme you can use to store your custom code.
Demo button for the Divi parent theme added.
Welcome to Elegant Themes Brad.
What do you think to the Divi Pagebuilder?
Presentation is excellent on the front end.
Need to spend some time playing around with it.
Looking forward to working out how Divi and other Elegant themes work and writing tutorials in support of customizing their themes.
Yes the presentation is stunning and some of the new modules are fabulous.
Looking forward to your Elegant Themes tutorials Brad.
