This tutorial provides the code you can use to add a slider to the front page of the Atmosphere Pro child theme by StudioPress.
The code is dependant on the use of the Soliloquy plugin.
Here’s a look at the slider added after the header on the home page of the theme:
There’s a gap after the slider before the front-page-1 widget area which you can also remove if needed simply by adding a few lines of CSS to the end of your child themes style.css file. The CSS to do this is also included in this tutorial.

What do you recommend for code editor? an offline editor, or plug-in editor?
I use Notepad++ for Windows and Text Wrangler for Mac.
I’ll send you the theme with the code installed if you like?
I see there are plug-ins that give line numbering and other editor functionality to admins in WP Admin. Are these a good option?
Better than the standard editor but not as good as a standalone application which opens different file types by default.
I suggest keeping the plugins to a minimum.
